Resetting Your Connection
In order to set up your new computer for use with the Knology Network, we need to register your MAC address. Also, in many troubleshooting scenarios and for setting up some programs, it is required that you have your IP address. Listed below are ways of retrieving your MAC and IP address based on what operating system you are using:
| Windows 95/98/98SE/ME |
| 1. | Click on the Start button, and select Run. In the space provided, enter 'winipcfg' and click on the OK button.

|
| 2. | Select your network card from the drop down list.

|
| 3. | Your MAC address will be displayed in the Adapter Address field and your IP address will be displayed in the IP Address field.
 |
Windows NT/2000/XP
|
| 1. | Click on the Start button, and select Run. In the space provided, enter 'cmd' and click on the OK button.
At the command line, enter 'ipconfig /all'. Your MAC address will be displayed as the Physical Address and your IP address will be displayed as the IP Address (see screenshot below).
|
Macintosh OS9.x
|
| 1. | Click on the Apple Menu |
| 2. | Click on the Apple System Profiler

|
| 3. | Click on 'Network Overview'

|
| 4. | Click on 'Apple Talk'

|
| 5. | The Hardware Address entry is your MAC address
 |
| Macintosh OS10.x |
| 1. | From the Apple menu, select 'System Preferences'

|
| 2. | Select the "Network" Pane

|
| 3. | With the TCP/IP tab selected, the entry next to the Ethernet Address field is your MAC address, and the entry next to the IP Address field is your IP address

|
Similar to setting up a new computer for an internet connection, you can set up some of the new gaming systems to access the internet also. Below are some walk-throughs on how to retrieve the MAC address for several gaming systems so that they can gain access to the Knology network:
| Microsoft XBox |
| 1. | Turn on your XBox console with no game disc in the disc tray. |
| 2. | From the XBox Dashboard, choose XBox Live .
These steps assume you cannot connect to XBox Live until you finish configuring your XBox console to use your PC's MAC address. Therefore, you should receive the following message: "Could not connect to XBox Live. Do you want to troubleshoot your network connection?". |
| 3. | From the Connect Status screen, select Settings . |
| 4. | The 12-digit number at the bottom-right corner of the Network Settings screens is the MAC address of your XBox console. Copy down this address. Do not make any changes to the MAC address.
 |
Sony PS2 |
| 1. | Load the Start-up CD in your PS2. |
| 2. | Make sure you have the network cable disconnected. |
| 3. | Walk through the Start-Up CD until it starts testing your connection. Since the network cable is disconnected, the test will fail. |
| 4. | You can now press the select button which will display the MAC. |
| 5. | The 12-digit number is the MAC address of your PS2; write it down so that you can use it later.

|
Knology is available to be used with a home network, as with all other network equipment that is connected to the modem. Knology will need the MAC address of the broadband router. Below are a few steps that you can take to obtain a connection via your router.
Configuring your router by cloning your MAC
Using your browser we will show you how to clone the MAC address of your current computer that is connected to the internet onto your router.
| Clone the MAC address of your Linksys router |
| 1. | Find the MAC address of the NIC that has your IP at the moment.
(see: Finding Ethernet MAC Address - Finding Ethernet IP Address) |
| 2. | Log into your router. If it's new or you haven't changed your settings, you need to type '192.168.1.1' in the address bar of the Internet Explorer browser. You will now see a screen like this.

You need to type in your password. If it's your first time using the router, the password will be 'admin' and no user name is needed.
|
| 3. | Click on the 'Advanced' button

|
| 4. | Click on the 'MAC Addr. Clone' button

|
| 5. | Now take the MAC address you wrote down previously, and enter it into the 'User Defined WAN MAC Address' field.

|
| Click on the 'Apply' button. If everything worked correctly, you should see this screen:

|
| Clone the MAC Address with a NETGEAR Router |
| 1. | Connect the computer that your ISP's installers used to establish internet connection to the router.
If you are unsure which computer was used, call your ISP, and ask what MAC address was registered. |
| 2. | Disconnect other computers from the router.
(If you do not want to disconnect other computers, you need to know the adapter's MAC address. Then in step 6, select 'Use This MAC Address', entering the adapter's address.) |
| 3. | In an internet browser, type the address '192.168.0.1'. |
| 4. | Type 'admin' for the username, 'password' for the password, and click OK. |
| 5. | Go to the Basic Settings > Router MAC Address. |
| 6. | Select 'Use Computer MAC Address'. |
| 7. | Click 'Apply'. This automatically gives the router the computer's MAC address. |
| 8. | Click 'Test' to make sure you are connected. If you are not connected, contact your ISP. |
| Clone the MAC Address with a D-LINK Router |
| 1. | Open your browser and type 192.168.0.1 in the Address window, then hit the Enter key. You do not need to type http://, only the IP address. This will connect you to the web configuration utility that lets you manage the router. You are not on the Internet at this point. Type 'admin' for the System Password, then click the Login button to login. |
| 2. | Select the Setup menu option from the bottom of the screen. Make sure the WAN type is set to Dynamic and check the box to enable Renew IP forever.
If the WAN configuration is not set to Dynamic, click the Change button and select it. Next, click the Save button and then the Reboot button on the bottom of the screen. Click OK when prompted to Reboot right now. |
| 3. | Next, we need to do something called cloning the MAC address. This will insure that you can connect through your modem in the event that the MAC address, or physical address, of your network card has been registered with your ISP.
Cloning the MAC copies the MAC address of your ethernet card to the WAN port of the router. In other words, it will appear to your ISP that your computer is connected to the modem not the gateway. That is why it is necessary to configure the router from the same computer that was originally setup with your modem. Otherwise, the gateway may copy the wrong MAC address to the WAN port.
From the Device Information page, click on the Tools menu option at the bottom of screen. This will take you to the 'Useful Tools' menu. Click on the 'Clone MAC' button, then click on the 'OK' button when prompted to "Change MAC address right now?".
'New MAC address will take effective after rebooting!' will be displayed and the 'Clone MAC' button will change to a 'Restore MAC' button.
Click on the 'Reboot' button, then click on the 'OK' button when prompted to "Reboot right now?". This will take you back to the Device Information page. Click on the 'Logout' button and then close your browser.
|
| 4. | Power down the router. With the router turned off, recycle the power on the cable modem. Just unplug it from the wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds and then power up the modem only. Wait until all of the lights on the modem have stabilized. After you are sure that the modem has stabilized, power up the router. |
| 5. | At this point you should be able to open your browser and browse the Internet. |
